Can technological improvements make aviation compatible with the Paris Agreement?

Organized by ISAE Alumni, with Arts & Métiers aeronautical group

Aviation contributes to global warming through its CO2 emissions and several non-CO2 effects such as contrails. Although breakthrough solutions make it possible to envisage a low-carbon aircraft by 2050, it is also essential to implement mitigation strategies today. This context raises many questions: how can we characterise the impact of aviation on the climate? Can we compare CO2 and non-CO2 effects? What technological solutions are being studied today to make aviation sustainable? Can we link the rate of growth of air traffic to the share of the carbon budget devoted to aviation? And finally, can we assess the energy resources available?

The answers to these questions depend to a large extent on societal choices and technical and economic developments that cannot be predicted with certainty. The objective of this conference is to provide the scientific elements necessary to build informed opinions on these questions, and to encourage debates that will contribute to the emergence of a collective position on these crucial issues.

Nicolas GOURDAIN, professor, and Jérôme FONTANE (ENSICA 2002), teacher-researcher, both at ISAE-SUPAERO, will present these issues. Philippe FONTA (IENAC 1987) from ENAC Alumni will bring his point of view.

The conference will be followed by a cocktail, then a dinner for those who wish to attend.
