Architecture and complexity

A lecture by Jean-Luc Wippler

On December 7, 2021, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the conference Architecture et complexité, acting in complexity as an architect, will be held in the Bellonte amphitheater at ENAC.
Hosted by Jean-Luc Wippler and organized by Catherine Letondal of the LII laboratory, this conference is open to the public and will be accessible by videoconference.

Jean-Luc Wippler, a former System Engineering 'Process & Methods' Leader at Thales, is now Senior Architect at Cap Gemini Engineering. He is also co-editor of the book Large-scale Complex Systems and Systems of Systems.

Abstract:

Complexity is increasingly disrupting the field of artificial systems architecture, upsetting certain forms of rationalism, and inviting itself into the architect's profession. This disruption mainly concerns two aspects:
- the first concerns the entities that the architect is called upon to architect. Here, the factors of complexity are both exogenous: these entities are part of an increasingly complex world, burdened with daunting challenges (digital transformation, energy transition, climate change, etc.) and endogenous: although the architect's role is to design, he or she is not the only one.) and endogenous: while aiming for simplicity on the surface (user experience, ergonomics, usability, etc.), these entities often conceal internal complexities.
- The second concerns the conditions for implementing an approach and postures appropriate to the complex process of representing, designing and communicating architecture. In other words, how do we deal with complexity in the architectural process?
This conference will look at the profession and the role that architects can, or must, play in such a context of increasing environmental complexity, and at the appropriate postures and approaches for dealing with this complexity.
