ENAC Alumni welcomes the signature of the "Toulouse Declaration" on sustainable development and decarbonization of aviation.

Dear ENAC Alumni,

As you have been informed by the press or other media, more than 40 States (including all European Union States) and about 150 companies or stakeholders (federations, trade unions, etc.) from the aviation and energy sector have signed the "Toulouse Declaration" on sustainable development and decarbonization of aviation.

ENAC Alumni welcomes this public-private partnership momentum to achieve carbon neutrality in air transport by 2050. The Toulouse Declaration confirms and goes far beyond the sectoral commitment made by the industry in October 2021. Indeed, the 27 Member States of the European Union, 10 countries of the ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference), as well as some twenty professional associations grouping manufacturers, airlines, equipment suppliers, airports, unions in the sector, and several dozen individual companies from the aviation and energy sectors, active in the production of sustainable aviation fuels, are now committed to the carbon neutrality of air transport by 2050.

Furthermore, ENAC Alumni is pleased that the technological options for improvement, presented by the industry, namely:

- Improving operations (on the ground and in flight, including optimizing trajectories or formation flights);
- promotion of sustainable fuels (which requires the establishment of a supply chain)
- or the development of new technologies (electricity, hybridisation, hydrogen)

are perfectly in line with the commitments of our "Manifesto for Environmentally Responsible Aviation" as well as with the working groups mobilized on these themes.

The Toulouse initiative, in the presence of Mr. Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the ICAO Council (International Civil Aviation Organization - a United Nations agency specializing in civil aviation matters, with 193 member states), is all the more welcome as it comes just a few hours before the opening of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) (February 7-18, 2022). This committee will debate and endorse proposals for the adoption in the fall of a "Long-Term Global Aspirational Goal" (LTAG) to reduce CO2 emissions. Such a goal, at the state level, would follow the industry commitments established by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) in October 2021.

Finally, ENAC Alumni expresses its great pride that our school, the Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (ENAC) was chosen to organize and host the Aviation Summit dedicated to the decarbonization of air transport, last February 3 and 4. The choice of our school highlights the quality of our training and underscores our ability to work together to research and implement technical, operational and organizational solutions for air transport to achieve this shared objective of zero net emissions by 2050. This goal must be achieved by affirming the importance of a holistic vision of sustainable development that takes full account of its environmental, economic and social dimensions.

Yours sincerely,

Marc HOUALLA
President ENAC Alumni
