SAF: the potential and limits of a key solution for decarbonization

Conference presented by Nicolas Jeuland, expert emeritus "environmental impact of aviation and future fuels", Safran, AAE correspondent The aviation industry is committed to carbon neutrality by 2050.

To achieve this, the aerospace industry is working on 3 main levers: constant improvement of fleet energy efficiency, notably through the development of ultra-efficient aircraft; optimization of operations (in flight, but also on the ground); and substitution of fossil fuels with low-carbon solutions. In this last category, SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) or CAD (Carburants d'Aviation Durables) have a crucial role to play, as they enable immediate decarbonization of existing and future fleets. The aim of this conference is to take stock of these fuels (types, resources used, production processes). The development of these fuels will be discussed, highlighting their potential, but also their limits (resource availability, cost). Finally, mechanisms to support the development of these sectors will be discussed.

Conference organized by l'Académie de l'Air et de l'Espace in partnership with La Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine - Université de Bordeaux - L'AQUI-IHEDN is a partner in this series of conferences.
