Towards unmanned ships and aircraft? How far can the machine replace man?
Spectacular advances in information technology and automation are already enabling the construction of largely autonomous vehicles in the transport sector.
The maritime and aviation sectors are taking part in this trend towards greater automation, which raises the following question: are we heading for a world in which transport ships and aircraft will have reduced or no crews on board?
The Académie de l'air et de l'espace and the Académie de marine have decided to organize a joint symposium on this subject, given the many similarities between the two sectors.
The following topics will be addressed during the symposium:
- technological prospects for automation ;
- expectations of shipowners and airlines; - expectations of manufacturers and equipment suppliers;
- ship and aircraft safety;
- employment and training issues. Social acceptability?
- legal aspects and liability issues.
This symposium is aimed at all professionals in the air and maritime sectors (researchers, industrialists, sailors, administrations, military authorities), as well as students, especially those already involved in these subjects or these two sectors of activity.
